Financial Roadmap: The Week Ahead January 19 to 23, 2009

This week markets will be moved more by news from corporate America and geopolitics than the scant pickings in the economic news arena. With the federal government closed Monday for a scheduled holiday and Tuesday for the Presidential inauguration, don't look for much news from those sources either unless it's truly dire news. The three major indicators this week are split between confidence readings and housing markets with one focused on both. The first big number of the week will be the State Street Investor Confidence Index, due out Tuesday. Wednesday brings a look at home builder confidence with the Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. Thursday the Commerce Department will report on December housing starts, a number not likely to show any growth, which is still a good thing given the continuing housing inventory glut.
